Negotiating Subaltern Consciousness : A Northeast Perspective by Dr.Bishnu Charan Dash.
Dr.Bishnu Charan Dash is a founder Professor of English at Assam Central University. By birth, an Odia, Professor Dash has spent more than 32 years in the Northeast serving her people, languages and their cultures from close quarters with special emphasis on the marginalized section of the society which prompted him to write two critical books on Subaltern discourse under the titles (a) Dynamics of Subaltern Consciousness: Critical Perspectives(2015) and (b) Negotiating Subaltern Consciousness : A Northeast Perspective. (2015)
Negotiating Subaltern Consciousness : A Northeast Perspective is primarily intended to analyze various issues of the marginalized voices from Northeast India, which has been neglected since the colonial rule. The very word "Northeast' is itself a colonial construct which is more often than not contrasted with the term 'mainstream India. Since independence, things have changed considerably, and negotiations among different cultures have become inevitable to realize homogeneity out of heterogeneity by juxtaposing different ethnic groups, their languages, literature, and cultures, and by highlighting their common socio-political, economic and other allied problems and issues with emphasis on their persistent attempt to preserve individual ethnic identity and socio-cultural ethos. The book comprises selected research papers which were read and discussed in the National Conference on The Voice of the Subaltern: A Northeast Perspective. And obviously, it accommodates papers highlighting such topical issues as partition historiography, understanding nationalism and ethnic consciousness, and the possibility of applying subaltern historiography and literary theory for a satisfactory understanding of various movements, problems and issues as articulated by the contributors in their writings from the Northeast. At the same time, the contributors have made laudable attempts to negotiate marginal space and subaltern consciousness in the writings of Temsula Ao, Homen Borgohain, Indira Goswami, Bidyasagar Narzary, Dhruba Jyoti Bora, Umakanta Sarma, Anjum Hasan, Rajendra Bhandari, etc in the backdrop of a multi-ethnic socio-cultural ethos.
